Behavior Of Quetzal Bird

Monday 13 April 2009

quetzal birdA quetzal bird is widely considered to be the most beautiful bird in the world with its bright red under parts and glittering green head and back.

It also has elegant green shoulder plumes and a unique green helmeted look.

The skin of the quetzal is very thin and easily torn, so it has evolved thick plumage to protect its skin.

Like other members of the trogon family, it has large eyes that makes easy to adapt to the dim light of its forest home.

Quetzal birds feed on mostly fruits especially wild avocadoes and other fruits in the laurel family which the birds swallow whole before regurgitating the pits, which helps to disperse these trees. They also eat insects like wasps, ants, and larvae and fros.

Resplendent Quetzal is found from southern Mexico to Panama. In Costa Rica it is mainly in mountain forests, though it migrates down slope outside the breeding season.Quetzals usually live alone when they are not breeding.

When breeding, females lay two pale blue eggs in a nest to be found in a hole which they shape in a rotten tree. Both parents take turn to incubate the eggs.

Recognizing Illness In Parrots, Before Its Too Late

Friday 20 March 2009

parrot healthBy the time you finally realize your pet parrot is ill, he may actually have been ill for some time already.

Birds in general are quite artful in hiding the fact that they are ill; this is because in nature, the other members of the flock, who fear for their own well-being, can wound those who are sick.

In order to be able to recognize illness symptoms in your parrot you will have to get to know its personality and recognize its habitual character.

Only then will you be able to discern atypical signs in your parrot’s behavior, which could alert you that something is wrong.

A typical behavior will generally be breathing difficulty and loss of appetite, or puffed up feathers. You may also find it is sleeping more than usual and is not as talkative or rarely calls to you.

Check whether the droppings are not too watery, or if there are not any at all, as well as runny eyes or vomiting.

You will have to consult the vet if you notice any uncharacteristic swelling or bleeding as well as trauma or seizure. Female birds may also have to be checked during reproductive stages.

Precautions Before Owning Cockatoo As Your Pet

Monday 2 March 2009

cockatooThe cockatoo is a bird found in grassland regions of Australia and in the desert. They are wild but they can be tamed.

It just depends how far you are willing to stretch your patience? You need to know the cockatoo’s habits in order to know how to handle them.

Cockatoos feed on grass seeds and roots. These birds have a huge appetite.

Seeing there is so much of what they eat in the wild, they can eat all day. So if you are considering taking one as your pet, make sure you stock up on bird food supplies.

These 350g birds love to chew and as long it’s chewable,it keeps them occupied. Keep this in mind when you are preparing the cage [Bird Cage] or whatever you are going to prepare as its habitat.

You don’t want to get home one day and find your cockatoo missing and the cage destroyed. It’s not a pretty sight.

This bird is bossy and very intelligent. This factor alone makes it even more difficult to tame it. It wants the upper hand so you may find difficulty in controlling it.

Caring Most Unusual Partridges

Monday 9 February 2009

partridgeThe Partridge is such a fragile looking, sweet looking small bird species.

You can just fall in love with them, so petite, I could go on.

Partridges occur in different types of species with the likes of gray partridges also known as the European partridge, the Alectoris rufa also known as the red- legged partridge and the Hungarian partridge are some of the unusual types that exist today.

Do not let their petite looks scare you; taking care of them is certainly easy despite the species or however unusual it might seem.

Taking care of partridges involves giving them the right food, provide adequate environment to allow proper growth and avoid death or sickness due to unbearable conditions and making them feel at home.

The shoots, clover seeds and grass leaves are the ideal food including ants as well. I am sure you can get all this in your garden or backyard.

Food for Partridges

Like humans and probably any other living creature food is vital. One of the first things to consider with a partridge is the food it eats and its availability. These birds are especially adapted to the prairies more than any other grass that they feed on.
