No, Not On The Carpet! Valuable Tips On Housebreaking Your New Pet

Wednesday 24 June 2009

petOne of the biggest challenges facing new pet owners is housebreaking their pet.

Generally, kittens and ferrets use a litter box and require minimal training.

Make sure that the litter box is easily accessible to the animal and located well away from pet feeding area.

Show the animal the litter box and reward your pet for using the box. Pet ferrets and kittens learn fairly quickly. If your kitten is male, you may want to have it neutered before it reaches sexual maturity to avoid instinctual spraying or marking behavior.

Dogs are a little more difficult to housebreak. You must establish a regular schedule for feeding and walking your puppy. It is important to remain on schedule every day including weekends. For young puppies and small dogs, wee wee pads are available.

As with the litter box, place the wee wee pads as far away as possible from the feeding area. At this point in training, it is helpful if the puppy can be confined to one area of your home (preferably one without wall to wall carpeting).

Training Your Pets To Stay Home Alone

Monday 15 June 2009

alone at homeWe can’t always carry our pets all the time as much as we may want to and thus they have to get used to the concept of being left at home.

The basis is to create a sense of security when leaving your pet at home and this can easily be done by creating a routine when leaving so as to let your pet know that you are leaving and you will be back.

Your pet has to get used to you leaving and coming back.

When leaving, create a phrase that you say to your pet to ensure that it understands that you are leaving but most of all create a happy mood and don’t act like your leaving is the end of the world. [Pet Care]

Pat his head and exit in a very happy mood and return in the same mood by greeting it as warmly as possible.

When left alone pets are bound to get nervous and start chewing on something. Ensure that you leave a bone or his favorite chew toy to avoid torn clothes and chewed shoes. The chew toy also ensures that your pet does not get bored and become destructive.

Should You Buy Insurance For Your Pet?

Wednesday 20 May 2009

pet care1In the United States, people spend almost as much on their pets as they do on their children.

For people without children, pets often service as surrogates.

Children usually have health insurance and if they do not, they cannot be denied life-saving medical care.

Pets, however, do not have the right to medical care and veterinarian bills can be just as high as medical bills.

Due to the rising cost of pet care, one auto insurance carrier actually included pet injury coverage in their policy to entice buyers. But more and more companies are now offering coverage as an optional benefit for their employees.

Pet insurance is available to most pet owners but you may have to make an effort to seek it out.

Most veterinarians and emergency pet clinics have information on pet insurance. Ask your veterinarian if he knows where you can purchase pet insurance and if he accepts it.  The cost of surgery for a pet can easily run into thousands of dollars.

The choice is to either pay for the surgery or have a beloved pet destroyed. However, having insurance can make the choice unnecessary, since the insurance will pay for most of the cost.

The Work Of The National Greyhound Adoption Program

Wednesday 13 May 2009

greyhoundThe National Greyhound Adoption Program (NGAP) was started in 1989 in response to the thousands of dogs annually discarded by the breeders of racing greyhounds.

The latter are breed in large numbers to ensure that winning animals will result. [Dog Breeds]

The racing life of a dog on average is about three to four years, if it is lucky, very many are put to sleep every year deemed unnecessary to requirements. Greyhounds are very loving creatures and the NGAP was started in Philadelphia to find good homes for them.

Raising public awareness is a big issue, as many do not realize the full extent of the plight of these stately animals. Since started its first clinic in 1995 by the NGAP the facility now operates on over two thousand greyhounds every year. They are the only true voice for the down trodden grey hounds of America.

There are other organizations in this field, many are small local groups manned by dedicated concerned citizens. This is a worldwide problem, which affects many countries; in fact, anywhere that greyhound racing takes place.

Keeping Dogs And Cats Cool This Summer

Wednesday 6 May 2009

pet careJust like humans cats and dogs do not appreciate too much heat, if you observe them outside, after a short spell in the sun they will soon seek out the nearest shady spot.

Keep a check on your pet and if he can’t find that essential shade create some for him.

A dog will quickly become de-hydrated, so either at home or when out and about with your dog or cat, ensure that they have plenty of water to drink. Cool is better, so throw in a few ice chips because it will be appreciated. [Pet Care]

If your dog travels in the car with you, never be tempted to leave them in the car. It is like an oven reaching temperatures as high as one hundred degrees, an animal could end up with heat stroke or exhaustion.

Ultimately, for beloved dog could die, as they do not perspire like humans, they use the pads of their paws and panting to expel bodily heat.

Just as dangerous is letting your furry companion travel in the back of an open truck. A four legged creature can not hang on to something like a human and could end up flying all over the place.
