Anyone who is interested in getting some freshwater turtles should do some research before they head up to the store because it’s a good idea to learn about a pet before you buy it. You need to know about everything that goes into a pet before you bring one home because you need to know how to take care of it on your own. You don’t want to be learning while you are supposed to be caring for the pet because you may fall behind in the things that you are supposed to be doing.
The cool thing about freshwater turtles is that they are actually coldblooded reptiles and they can end up growing up to around two meters long. One of the most well known facts about these turtles is that they can live for extremely long periods of time for an animal. Some of these turtles have been known to live for as long as 150 years, and sometimes they last even longer when they are held in captivity.
You will mainly find these kinds of turtles in rivers, ponds and lakes, so you will need to create that kind of environment in your home somewhere. Some people have ponds in their backyards, and that is usually the best place to put your turtle if you can.
It’s important to keep your turtle in a wet area because they can start feeling uncomfortable if you leave them out in the dry heat for too long during the day.
How to properly care for your freshwater turtles
All freshwater turtles are omnivores which means that they eat both vegetables and meat for all of their meals during the day. You don’t have to worry about a lot of diet restrictions when it comes to these animals because they are used to eating just about anything while they are out in the wild. The most common turtle foods they like to eat are insects, fish and certain aquatic plants.
The one thing that you need to make sure you do before you purchase any kind of turtle is to checkout where that turtle came from. You want to make sure that your turtle is going to be healthy for a very long time, so you will need to somehow confirm the origin of this pet. One of the best signs of a healthy turtle is if their shell is flawless without a lot of damage done to it over time.
Watch where you put your turtles
If you are thinking about getting more than just one freshwater turtle then you need to make sure that you keep them separated as often as possible. Freshwater turtles can sometimes get rather territorial, and you don’t want any fights to breakout in your own home. Although you can learn plenty of information about the freshwater turtle before you even go to the store, some of the information will not really sink in until you have taken care of your own turtle for quite a good bit of time.
