The Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in America, according to 2008 registration statistics by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Labrador Retriever Holds Firm in Top Spot and Lovable Bulldog Continues its Ascent. More than twice as many Labs were registered last year than any other breed making it a likely leader for many years to come, the Bulldog continues to amble its way up the list.

Other favorites include the Yorkshire Terrier, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Beagle, Boxer, Dachshund, Bulldog, Poodle and Shih Tzu, according to the report.

The bulldog, known for its adaptive nature and love of people, makes a great family pet, says Lisa Peterson, spokesperson for the American Kennel Cub (AKC).

Aw man! I wish standard poodle would have made the list, they are so intelligent and do not shed and above all great companions. Contrary to popular belief you don’t have to cut them all foo-foo either! They look beautiful with a full coat.

I know this is an old article, so I can not say for sure that back when it was first posted, it was not accurate, but I am pretty sure it was not accurate then and more sure it is not accurate now. I would like to know what sources are used to gather such info?
A large number of dogs that are adopted from shelters across the country are not the breed they pick to use for identification. So, while Retrievers are “Popular” dogs, if any dogs from adoptions from shelters or rescues are included, they will need to recalculate their stats. None of the Pit bull breeds are on that list, yet the shelters are full of Adult Pit bull Terriers, somebody has to be owning these animals as pets for the shelters to be full of adults. Oh, the pups are there too, but they get put to sleep pretty quickly. When I walk my dogs, all I see are other people with a toy breed, or a Pit bull breed. Lists like this should indicate where they collected their data, or as far as I am concerned, they are just bogus.
