10 Human Food Items Harmful for the Dog

If you are a dog owner you should have the right knowledge about its diet and even better knowledge about what foods should be avoided. Although, your pet is a part of the family but do not offer a complete family plate to the dog as some human foods are very dangerous to a dog’s health.

In fact, read the list below and make sure that these foods are not slipped down the table or even thrown on the floor or else the consumption can cause your dog some real health problems. Apart from making them overweight (which is unwanted for further health complications), these foods are downright dangerous. Below given is a list of human food items that are harmful for your dog:

1. Chocolate

This is one food that everyone loves to have – but not your dog! Chocolate is made of two chemicals known as caffeine and theobromine and these affects nervous system and the heart of dogs. Theobromine cannot be metabolised in a dog’s digestive system and thus it starts building up causing health issues.

Solid chocolates, choc chip cookie crumbs, or even cocoa powder should not be offered to the dogs. The follow-up symptoms may be restlessness, vomiting, diarrhoea, irregular heartbeat, seizures – it can even get fatal. Dark chocolate is complete NO as it has high amounts of caffeine and theobromine.

2. Onions and Garlic

These two foods can damage the red blood cells of your dog. If your dog has the habit of regular meals, make sure they are devoid of these bulbous plants. Raw onions and garlic, and cooked in mince meat – both are dangerous and can lead to haemolytic anemia.

3. Grapes and Raisins

Containing a toxin that is known to damage the kidneys of the dogs, grapes and raisins should also be avoided. Make sure you don’t drop them in your house here and there. The consequences of having them can lead to diarrhoea, vomiting, and even kidney failure in dogs.

4. Certain Bones

Bones are also in this list but some of them – brittle and small bones like those of fish and chicken leg often breaks in to smaller and sharper pieces after the dog chews them. These bones can choke or pierce into the digestive tract. Give raw bones of the right size to your dog.

5. Caffeine

Coffee has caffeine, which causes seizures and heart palpitations in dogs. Thus, even if little amount spills over your floor; make sure to wipe it before your dog gets tempted.

6. Fatty and Oily Food

Avoid oily and fatty foods because it will simply make the pet fat, immobile and sick with health disorders. Especially for small dogs, such foods are not advisable as they do not have the capacity to digest it. Excessive of it can cause pancreatitis, the first showing symptoms are vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.

7. Fruit Pits or Seeds

The seeds and fruit pits can choke your dog and some fruit pips can have the highly toxic component as well.

8. Macadamia Nuts and Walnuts

Never give these nuts as treats to your dog; Macadamia nuts have a toxin that affects the body organs, the symptoms show fever, tremors, faster heartbeat, and weakness. It can also paralyse the hind legs of your fury friend. Walnuts have a fungus, which acts as a poison to dogs which can also get fatal.

9. Raw Meat and Fish

Anything raw is not good for your dog; raw eggs, meat and fish can be abundant in bacteria that will lead to food poisoning. Also avoid certain types of fish like trout, salmon, shad, or sturgeon as they can cause “salmon poisoning disease” or “fish disease”. These diseases can kill the dog within 2 weeks.

10. Salty Foods

Too much of salty foods like chips or pretzels is definitely not a good offering to your dog as it can lead to excessive thirst and frequent urination. There are also chances of sodium ion poisoning. Some of the symptoms include depression, diarrhoea, vomiting, depression, elevated body temperature, tremors, and seizures.
